They marched in the front row, side by side with leaders of organized labor, in a demonstration 15,000-strong. They spoke eloquently at rallies, press conferences and meetings of their threatened extinction in the face of expanding agribusiness. They argued with passion against the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and the loss of control over their crops. They filled a groaning table with their own products in a celebration of simple fresh foods. They were the farmers.
